The Chocolate Soldier is a charming operetta in three acts, set in Bulgaria during the Serbo-Bulgarian War of 1885. Bulgaria has been at war with its neighbor for the past two years. The operetta opens in the bedroom of a Bulgarian colonel, where we find his wife and daughter anxiously awaiting the return of their menfolk from the war. They are joined by their cousin, a romantic young girl. Suddenly, a young Serbian soldier, Bumerli, falls into the bedroom through the window. He is lost and wounded, and begs the women for help. They agree to hide him from the Bulgarian soldiers, but only on the condition that he promises to leave as soon as he is well enough to travel...
