In the summer of 1889 Victor Hatherley arrived at Dr Watson’s house in a terrible state with blood pouring from his left hand after he had been attacked by a man with a cleaver. Hatherley was an Engineer an orphan and a widow who had been approached by the gaunt man with a german accent to help fix his hydrolic machine. Hatherley was lucky to escape and Dr Watson suggested it was a case for Sherlock Holmes.
