Lamont receives a telephone call from an old acquaintance, Anthony Phillips, who is desperate for his help. On their way to the old Phillips mansion, through the swampland, their car becomes hopelessly stuck. And then when they try to get away from the quicksand, they get themselves caught too. A fortunate encounter with a stranger saves their lives, and takes them to the mansion - but he doesn't want them to stay. He warns them that they must get far, far away from the terrors of the night...
