Mrs Jack Barbour, waiting up for her husband, well known attorney and after-dinner speaker, goes to the front door for the umpteenth time to peer toward the public gates of Seacliff, in the hope of seeing headlights. Wisps of fog make a shifting white curtain under the street lights, and the streets seem deserted until she hears Hazel call her name. Then father Barbour also pops by to let them know that he has just received a telegram from Nicky and Claudia who have arrived in Hawaii.
