Long before the middle of the nineteenth century, the American Indian was doomed. The buffalo who once roamed his vast lands and whom he depended, not only for food, but every other aspect of his life, was being wiped out. Cattle now graze where once the buffalo roamed, and the land they grazed was no longer Indian land, but the white mans. Cowboys and Indians were natural opponents, from their roots.
