There's a gentleman to see Birdie, waiting for her in the living room, and Gildy and Leroy are curious as to who the caller is. He's an attorney, and he has some news for Birdie. Her dear, old (no-good) uncle has died. He ran away from home a long time ago and made lots of money in the West Indies, then he retired to England, where he passed away. He has left Birdie a modest legacy, and she can't quite believe it!
