The story starts with a young man riding through the rain into Clay City. He arrives, gets off his horse, ties a wet bandana over his face and walks into a building. He walks into the Fargo Station, draws his gun and kills one man and seriously injures the other. From the evidence it looks like the young man was Ben Schofield, the sheriff's son, but Britt finds that hard to believe and sets out to investigate.
