Alexander Woollcott as the writer and narrator gives us a biography of a masterpiece telling its story with the help of noted composer Deems Taylor who has composed and will conduct the original musical score. 

He narrates this story with a journey back in to history looking at the world as it was on the night of November 7th 1861. He tells of how during the American civil war the soldiers, as they marched, liked to sing to the tune of the song John Brown's Body but adding their own words and then how Julia Ward Howe came to write the most fitting words to the song she loved and called The Battle Hymn of the Republic.
