Helen Stoner comes by train to see Sherlock Holmes to seek his help with a case. She lived with her stepfather Dr Roylott. When her mother died she left £2000 to Dr Roylott as long as Helen and her twin sister Julia resided with him then in the event of their marriage they would receive £500 a year each. Her sister Julia was engaged to be married but within a fortnight of the day that was fixed for the wedding she died. Her last words to her sister were, “It’s the band, the speckled band”…
