Barton Drake investigates a case of the seeming suicide of Claire Waterstone who locked herself in her library and drank a glass of poisoned milk. She was reading a book when she died, all the doors and windows were locked from the inside and the only other person in the house at the time was her crippled sister who raised the alarm.
