Henry Simon from the missing persons bureau is called upon to find Helen Kapping by her husband, Lindsay. He first met Helen on the evening of his discharge from the army in May 1946, at a small party given by his friend to celebrate the occasion. They saw each other regularly after that, and some six weeks later, he asked her to become his wife. Seven years later, and Helen, quite out of the blue, has just announced that she is leaving him.
