It's about six in the morning, and a false dawn breaks over the city as it stirs into activity. Groups of early workers start to crowd the subway, and the news trucks with the early morning city editions speed through the city. As one of those trucks speeds up to the intersection, the driver drops off a bundle of newspapers in front of the news stand, narrowly missing Kitty DeCarlo, who after crossing the street stops in front of the cocktail bar. There doesn't seem to be anyone in there, but she wants a drink. The guy that opens the door isn't pleased to see her - the bars are only open between 8 and 4, so she's got another couple of hours to wait...
