Late one evening, officers of the Paris Sûreté Police are talking with Monsieur Boutierre - the President of the Bank of the Republic, who wishes to acquaint them with the fact that the bank has received a shipment of gold totalling five million Francs, and are thus expecting every vigilance and protection from the Sûreté.
