Your Favorite OTR Mom!

Your Favorite OTR Mom!

Last year we ran a poll to see who is your favourite OTR mom, and the winner was ... (drumroll please) ...

Harriet Nelson, with nearly 25% of the vote! Here were the final results...

It's not the first time Harriet has won the acclaimed honor in the "best mom's" category, as she was also included in Yahoo's Top 10 TV Moms from Six Decades of Television, in 1952-1966.

If you haven't listened to an Ozzie and Harriet show before, you've been missing out on a real treat! The family situation comedy shows were created by Ozzie Nelson, and were first broadcast on October 4th 1944, enjoying a long run on the radio, before transitioning to television, from 1952 until 1966.

The series starred Ozzie Nelson and his wife, singer Harriet Nelson (nee Snyder, professionally Hilliard), and their young sons, David and Eric "Ricky" Nelson. Their kids were blessed with the perfect life, and thanks to their Mom and Dad, they grew up, went to college and got married - a path we all aspire to follow.

One of my favourite shows from Ozzie and Harriet is called Disintegrating Family. Even though this show broadcast way back in 1947, I was stunned at the similarities between then and right now in 2016...

"It’s a beautiful day and Ozzie is waiting for the bus home, after a morning at work. He's looking forward to spending the afternoon with his kids, but when he gets home he finds that the boys have their own plans for the afternoon. David is going to see the seals with some of his friends, and Ricky is going to the city auditorium to see a television broadcast. Even Harriet has other things to do!

Then his neighbor Barney calls round and is surprised to hear that they're not all going to the baseball game together. Ozzie tries to convince himself that it’s great how his kids want to do educational things rather than go to the game. However, what Ozzie doesn't realise, is that the only thing disintegrating in the Nelson family today is communication! It turns out that all the Nelsons actually want to do, is go to the game together!"

I'd love to know what you think of the show. Maybe you have a similar story you could share with us?

There are lots more Mother's Day shows in the RUSC archives, so Joy and I have put a page of these together, so that you can sit back and celebrate the day. Here's the link:-
