What's coming up in February
Opportunity has safely
rolled off its lander to explore the surface of the red planet and a few weeks
earlier Spirit the Rover touched down on the other side of Mars. Both are searching for evidence that water
and life existed. With all that space exploration going on I couldn't resist
making February the month where I added lots more sci-fi onto the site.
Mars, the fourth planet
from the sun, has been a topic of fascination for a long time amongst science
fiction writers and old-time radio fans can delight in the fantastic array of
shows produced including of course the classic of all times H G Wells’ War of
The Worlds
The
Mercury Theatre on the Air broadcast the War of the Worlds on the eve of Halloween in 1938 in a news-style. It began with the great Orson Welles playing the part of the newscaster, "Ladies and gentlemen, I have
a grave announcement to make. Incredible as it
may seem, strange beings who landed in New Jersey tonight are the vanguard of
an invading army from Mars."
At the time it was reported that people had actually believed it to be true and much chaos had emerged and even some suicides. You can find this show on RUSC under
in the Drama category, but remember when you listen that you haven’t just switched
the news on! I'll be adding another version of this story, which was
presented in 1955 by Lux Radio Theatre.
That should be up by the weekend.
Here's a link to the original version.
War
of the Worlds - Mercury Theatre version
I have
also added many more brilliant quality episodes of X Minus 1 and will
be putting up a new
series called Exploring Tomorrow, which are dramatic adventures
of the mind, hosted by John Campbell Jnr. who was, at that time, the editor of
Astounding Science Fiction magazine.
Any young RUSC members interested in outer-space adventures
can look forward to some Buck Rogers
In The 25th Century, who with his friends Wilma, Dr Huer and Black
Barney have many adventures in battle against the evil Killer Kane and Ardala
Valmar. And let’s not forget the exploits of Commander Buzz Corry and Cadet
Happy as they venture on "missions of daring in the name of interplanetary
justice" in Space Patrol. You will find more of these shows added each Thursday
throughout February.
But there's more than
just interplanetary adventures in store for February. In the
middle of all this sci-fi on Saturday the 14th of February, comes
St Valentines day and I'll be doing my best to add a few loving shows for all you romantics out there!
If you're not into sci-fi and romance don't worry as there'll still be a more than ample supply of all your favorites and lots more besides.
Happy listening my friends
