The Old Time Radio Travel Guide
According to online statistics, over 200 million Americans don't have a passport, preferring instead to explore the many vast and diverse destinations on home soil, rather than leaving for foreign shores.
And who can blame them! We have beautiful beaches, spectacular lakes and mountains, breathtaking scenery, geological marvels, the best national parks in the world, and the best theme parks too!
So now, more than ever, it seems like the perfect time for domestic travel due to the travel restrictions the pandemic has brought upon us.
Joy and I have spent quite a lot of time driving around the States in both an RV, staying on campgrounds, and our SUV, staying in hotels and motels.
During our travels, we always listen to old time radio, which I'm sure you're not surprised at!
Many years ago (probably around 20 years ago in fact!) I remember driving from New York to Chicago and listening to The Bickersons for the first time. The miles just flew by, and Joy and I laughed so much the whole journey - it really is one of the most relatable shows on the radio.
So when we were planning our summer vacation this year, I thought it would be fun to look-up destinations inspired by radio shows, using my favorite RUSC search feature, of course!
There are over 200 search results which feature the word 'vacation', and include destinations we definitely won't be going to - such as the Planet Venus, (Tom Corbett, Space Cadet), or any too-good-to-be-true $100 mansion rentals like in one particular Lights Out story!
In addition to those 200 results, searching for a popular tourist destination brings even more results! So on your next trip along Route 66, or to one of our National Parks, or to any of our famous landmarks in fact, make sure to look for a topical show to listen to on your way.
For the remaining 36% of our nation who do have a passport, maybe you'd like to take a little inspiration from the Lockharts in Abroad With The Lockharts to plan your next trip overseas. The series featured Mr and Mrs Lockhart embarking upon their summer vacation to celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary. It's an absolute joy to listen to, both for their hilarious husband-wife rapport, and the experiences they have.
Happy listening my friends,
