The Girl Lincoln Loved

The Girl Lincoln Loved

As you know the 12th February is Abraham Lincoln's Birthday so I was thinking of shows to add for President's day next week. Then I remembered that Valentine's Day is on the 14th February and my mind went to thoughts of romance. TheCavalcade of America solved my problem of what appropriate show to present to you. On the 23rd October 1944 they broadcast a love story about Ann Rutledge, The Girl Lincoln Loved.

In it Joan Fontaine stars as Ann Rutledge, the girl who Lincoln loved, and John McIntire as Abe Lincoln the tall strapping 24 year old with no thoughts of ever becoming President. It is a story of their few happy moments together but mostly it is about Ann Rutledge herself and her father and mother and brothers and sisters and her everyday life and the qualities that made herthe girl Lincoln loved.

You will anticipate the ending of the story because its ending is a legend you'll find in any history book and the ending is not a happy one so have your tissues at the ready.

Of course the 14th February may be Valentines Day but it is much more important to we fans of old-time-radio as we take the day to remember Jack Benny on his birthday. On Saturday I will add a Jack Benny program from 11th February 1951 in which Jack has sent out invitations to his forthcoming birthday party. Last year he ended it with RSVP and got no presents. He isn't taking any chances this year and everyone finds a subtle message hinting at what he would like. For example Mary's invite is signed off C.U.C.L., which Jack tells her means could use cuff links. Dennis finds G.T.B.T.K.W.I.N. on his invite and Don's invite is signed off 15.9.34. You'll have to listen if you want to find out what they mean!

If you want to get ahead for President's Day click on the link for shows relevant to the day including the Jack Benny Program entitled George Washington Slept Here.

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
