The Eisenhower Years

The Eisenhower Years

The 11th day of November is Veterans day. A day to reflect on the soldiers both past and present who have and continue to risk their lives for the greatest honor of their country.

With this in mind we invite you take a step back in time and listen to the story of one of the most important commanders in history, a man who was dedicated to his job, Dwight Eisenhower. During World War II as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe, he had the biggest force, the biggest operation and he won with it.

Produced by Extension Radio Television at Kansas State University in 1969 & 1970, The Eisenhower Years is a chronicle in sound of the Dwight Eisenhower years.  It is a 13-part radio documentary dealing with the life of the 34th President of the United States.

As a soldier Dwight Eisenhower commanded the mightiest armada in history. As the President he guided the nation through eight years of increasingly complex times. And as both soldier and statesman he was one of the sculptures of the twentieth century. If history has yet to place Eisenhower there is little doubt where the people have already placed him. He was firmly in the hearts of the nation in touch with the general people, friendly, human and warm, a hero who generated a feeling of integrity.

This 13-part series covers his early life, including the influence of his family, his religious upbringing in Kansas and its part in shaping his personality and the paths that would lead him to his important place in history.

The experience of war taught Eisenhower the necessity of peace. He had been known as the peace general and would become the peace President. He recognised that the oppressed people of the world looked to America to help free them of the fear and tyranny of war. Upon assuming the office of president in 1953 he pledge his unceasing efforts to the cause of peace with justice for all mankind.

We will be adding all 13 episodes over the next two weeks and you can a click on this link for other shows relating to Veteran's Day.
