The Brontë Sisters

The Brontë Sisters

Anne Brontë is a feminist icon thanks to 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall' and she is a fitting icon for women everywhere on International Women's Day 2019.

In fact, all of the Brontë sister's could arguably be recognized as some of literature's most colorful and gifted writers.

Born in Yorkshire, England in the 19th century, their sheltered life was fraught with drama and romance, so vividly presented in the novels they wrote.

Whilst reviewing shows over the weekend, it struck me again how I find it nigh on impossible to tear myself away from a Brontë radio presentation - they literally have me mesmerized from the very first line. Before I know it, I've arrived at the interval, and I'm thinking to myself, "awww shucks, well I may as well listen to the remainder now!"

I've listed below three of my favorite Brontë radio presentations by Lux Radio Theatre:-

Wuthering Heights

A powerful gripping tale written by Emily Brontë - a girl whose life was as bleak as the sombre Yorkshire Moors where the story is laid. The film had previously stirred many millions and this version will tug at your heartstrings as one of the greatest love stories ever told.

Lux Radio - Wuthering Heights

Jane Eyre

Starring Loretta Young and Orson Welles in this presentation of Charlotte Brontë's unforgettable love story. A tempestuous story of emotions set in 19th century England. Appearing as it did, published under pseudonym early in the reign of Queen Victoria, its shock contents made it as appalling and popular as a royal scandal and as widely circulated as gossip. An immediate success!

Lux Radio - Jane Eyre

Devotion

A fictionalized account of the lives of the Brontës. Charlotte and Anne have made the decision to leave their family to become governesses with other families, leaving behind their sister Emily and brother Branwell. The two sisters long to break free from their tedious, sheltered life in Yorkshire, England, to prepare them for their careers as writers. The story takes us on a journey through the lives of the Brontë siblings, and their tumultuous relationships with one another.

What do you think?

I'd love to hear your thoughts on these shows. Maybe you feel there is a Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre or Devotion presented in another series which you prefer? It could be that the Matinee Theater, Campbell Playhouse, Ford Theater, Favorite Story, Weird Circle, or CBS Radio Mystery Theater presentations are amongst your favorites?

Happy listening,
