The Blood Moon
Don't miss this week's deep red blood moon - the longest lunar eclipse of this century.
Of all the objects in the heavens none has been more closely nor more consistently observed than the moon, and it holds such fascination that its mystery has been used so many times to set the scene in radio shows of every genre, from science fiction through to thriller.
"On a dark, moonless night...", "In the light of the moon...", "When the moon arose...", "In the dark of the moon...", "In the moonlit cemetery...", "It was a barren, almost lunar landscape...", and so on.
Well this week, earthlings around the world will be treated to a special event, the longest lunar eclipse of this century.
If you take a moment this Friday, July 27th, as the moon rises, you will begin to see the process by which the moon hides beneath the Earth's shadow, in what we call a lunar eclipse, and which will result in a magical, deep red blood moon.
It got me to wondering how many shows on RUSC mention the moon, so I did a search (my favorite RUSC feature!), to see what I could find, and the results show that the moon has been fascinating us in radio for many years too!
Whether it's science fiction, and the story of man's first steps on the lunar landscape, such as in the show First Encounter, from the series Theater Five, or the classic whodunnit The Moonstone from the series My Favorite Story, about a yellow diamond, which gleamed from the forehead of the four handed Indian goddess of the moon, and which grew and faded in brilliance along with the waxing and waning of the moon, there are plenty of shows to listen to whilst you behold this amazing spectacle on Friday.
The best part about lunar eclipses is that you don't need any special equipment or glasses as there's no blindingly bright sun to look at. Simply step outside and look up toward the moon this July 27th summer night and witness the beautiful deep red glow of the blood moon lunar eclipse.
Happy listening my friends,
