Recommendation - Jack Benny Program

Recommendation - Jack Benny Program

Joy and I always enjoy reading your comments on the shows on RUSC. We listen to so many shows while reviewing them to add to RUSC that it's great to hear what you think.

This gave me an idea to highlight some of your comments so that if you are wondering what might be a good listen, then wonder no more.

For the next week we are going to feature a recommendation each day with your comments starting with this one from Friend of RUSC, Chuck Houlton.

His comments refer to the Jack Benny Program show Jack's Violin Is Returned broadcast February 28th, 1937. Here's what he said:

"This is a very special episode of this show. All of the elements for which it was famous are on display. But what's also here is Jack Benny's talent for musical comedy - a quality he rarely employed at this stage of his career.

After weeks of teasing, Benny finally plays Schubert's notoriously difficult Die Beine (The Bee) on his violin. He plays it ably and also humorously. And it's a joy to hear.

Benny commonly made fun of his musical ability. But, while it's clear he was no Szigeti, he was also no hack. He had obvious training and skill. And, as always, he knew exactly what he was doing.

The only problem with this episode is that Mary Livingstone is not in it. She apparently took the week off for some reason. But still, it's a classic among classics - not to be missed."

Be sure to post your comments, what you think of this show or any other shows you enjoy. It helps make everyone's listening experience more fun.

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
