R U Sitting Comfortably? Time To Immerse Yourself In OTR
I don't know about you but I am despairing at everything that is going on, not only in the US, but in the world right now.
More than anything this makes me glad that I can immerse myself in RUSC and the wonderful old-time-radio shows and drift off to a bygone era when the world seemed like a more simpler place.
That's not to say that everything in the 1930's, 40's, 50's and 60's was perfect, of course we know it was not and those times are also depicted in many of the old-time-radio dramas and history programs.
But in the Thrillers and Detective series the cops were out catching the real criminals and the bad guys were always brought to justice, good always prevailed over evil and the wrongdoer would always get his comeuppance.
In romance there would be trials and tribulations, sadness and happiness but always an enduring kindness towards fellow men and love always conquered in the end.
The many comedy shows have stood the test of time and are often as funny today as ever they were. The banter between Jack Benny and Fred Allen, the bickering of John and Blanche in The Bickersons, the situations in the many family comedies from The Aldrich Family, The Life of Riley, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and Father Knows Best all done with kind hearted humor that warms your soul and makes you laugh out loud.
Right now I am enjoying our latest addition to the Lum and Abner series. The shows date back to January in 1946 and see the old fellows each thinking the other is out to kill him and collect the five thousand dollars under the terms of their new partnership insurance policy.
In one episode while the old fellows were putting some cases of merchandise up on the shelves the step ladder broke causing Abner to fall and drop a heavy box on Lum's head. Both Lum and Abner immediately interpreted this as a deliberate attempt on the part of the other to cause a fatal accident and thus be able to collect his partner's insurance money.
It's so amusing but you just know they will realize their misunderstandings and carry on in the Jot 'Em Down store, their friendship still intact.
We were about to take our Christmas tree down for another year but after listening to the Lux radio version of The Bishop's Wife Joy and I just sat down and watched the original old black and white movie starring the very handsome (Joy's words) Cary Grant, the dashing David Niven and beautiful Loretta Young.
The final words of the movie read by David Niven as the Bishop in his Christmas sermon were, "Loving kindness, warm hearts and the stretched out hand of tolerance, all the shining gifts that make peace on earth."
My spirits are completely lifted!
Oh and I think we'll leave the Christmas tree up until the weather and the news get better, hahaha!
Happy listening my friends,
