Mothers Day

Mothers Day

Mother's Day is a special day to celebrate the love and sacrifices of mothers everywhere. And what better way to honor them than by listening to some classic old-time radio programs that celebrate the role of mothers in our lives.

Back in the golden age of radio, mothers were often portrayed as the heart of the family, with their kindness, wisdom, and nurturing nature contributing to the well-being of their loved ones. Many popular radio shows featured strong maternal characters who provided guidance and support to their families during challenging times.

One classic radio program that exemplifies this is the Great Gildersleeve, a show that aired from 1941 to 1957. The main character, Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, was a single father raising his niece and nephew. Throughout the program, he would seek advice and support from his wise and nurturing housekeeper and mother figure, Birdie.

Another iconic radio show that celebrated mothers was Fibber McGee and Molly. This long-running comedy program featured the loving and caring matriarch of the family, Molly McGee. She provided a stable and comforting presence in the lives of her husband, Fibber, and their friends and neighbors.

Mama Bloom's Brood was another popular show that celebrated the role of mothers. The show revolved around a large family living in a tenement building in the city, with the matriarch of the family, Mama Bloom, taking care of her many children and grandchildren. The show tackled important issues facing families at the time, such as poverty and the challenges of urban life.

We cannot forget to include the warm, motherly Aunt Mary, at the heart of the Wakefield community. She was played by Jane Morgan, who you might recognize as the voice of Our Miss Brooks nosy landlady, Mrs Davis. It was one of the most listened-to morning shows across the country, and one of the best examples of radio soap operas, as it features pretty much every dramatic plot you would expect of a soap - and a lot more besides! Love triangles, long-buried secrets, betrayal, lies, jealousy all woven intricately alongside warm friendships, romance, chivalry, and a little comedy too.

As we honor our mothers on this special day, taking a trip down memory lane and listening to these classic old-time radio shows can serve as a touching reminder of the love and support our mothers have given us throughout our lives. Even though the world has changed significantly since these programs aired, the role of mothers remains as crucial as ever.

So, on this Mother's Day, let us all take a moment to thank our mothers for all the love, care, and sacrifices they have made for us. And what better way to do so than by listening to some classic old-time radio programs that celebrate the unwavering love of mothers?

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
