More Married Couples
From The Golden Age of Radio

Oh dear Joy and I thought we'd pretty much got it covered but it seems we missed some very important couples from our previous editorial. How could we forget Jack Benny and Mary Livingstone (nee Sadie Marks). Jack Benny met his wife when she was working as an assistant in a department store and they married on 14th January 1927. She first appeared on The Jack Benny Show playing the president of his fan club. Then when the character of Mary Livingstone was created Jack gave the role to his wife Sadie who as Mary Livingstone became one of Benny's main deflators of his ego.

We also forgot to mention Mr & Mrs Ronald Colman. Ronald Colman and Benita Hume Coleman appeared together in the situation comedy The Halls of Ivy as President of the Halls of Ivy College Dr William Todhunter and his English wife Victoria. Incidentally, prior to appearing together in The of Halls of Ivy from January 1950 they both appeared on the Jack Benny Program and proved to be very popular with their dry humor. They were married on 30th September 1938 and remained happily so until Ronald's death in 1958.

And who could forget Goodman and Jane Ace (nee Sherwood) of Easy Aces? We did! Easy Aces was a situation comedy in which Jane, under the guidance of her husband who also wrote the show, entertains with her malapropisms. The show ran for fifteen years from 1930 through 1945 in its various formats. In 1948 Goodman and Jane returned to the air in mr ace and JANE and the couple were billed as radio's original comedy couple, which they undoubtedly were. They were married in 1928 and remained happily so until Jane's death in 1974. Goodman died in 1982.

And finally, we failed to mention singing cowboy Roy Rogers and his wife Dale Evans who were known as the King of the Cowboys and Queen of the West. They appeared together in The Roy Rogers Show from 1946 and were married on 31st December 1947.

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
