Moon Over Africa - New To RUSC

If you are a fan of the I Love a Mystery series then I can guarantee that you are going to enjoy this new series to RUSC, Moon Over Africa.

It is the story of a little band of explorers lead by Professor Anton Edwards, a giant of a man the keynote of whose life is scientific discovery. Two hundred miles from the banks of the upper Congo River in the jungles of French Equatorial Africa Professor Edwards has made his camp awaiting the coming of his assistant Jack Martin before travelling further in to the hinterlands. With him is his daughter Lorna, just graduated from an American university and Umguru a huge native Masai of royal blood.

There are 26 episodes in total approximately 12 minutes each and all exceptional quality which I will add weekdays from Monday 25th April.

Moon Over Africa was originally broadcast in 1935 and was written by Talbot Mundy whose Jimgrim novels are said to have been one of the inspirations for Indiana Jones. Mundy also gave us The Ghost Corps and beginning in the spring of 1936 he became the scriptwriter for radio's Jack Armstrong: The All-American Boy. Talbot Mundy was a disciple of Madame Blavatsky's so you can expect some Theosophical beliefs and theories to crop up quite often. Talbot's best book of the type was arguably Om: The Secret Of Ahbor Valley.

Talbot Mundy was born William Lancaster Gribbon in London, 1879 and after spending many years in India and Africa he became an American citizen under the name Talbot Mundy on 9 December 1916. This suggests that this program may have originated in the USA though if it did there is no record of it. Another candidate could be South Africa where Mundy had spent many years but unlikely as the heyday of South African Radio did not begin until 1950.

I can find little information about this program and the cast seems to be unknown. But what I do know is that in my opinion it is an OTR treasure!

African drums are talking. Over weary wastes of jungle the drums bring you a story of Africa that land of mystery and strange ritual, ebony bodies, witch doctors and sudden death. The land of jungle and impenetrable swamp where the primeval sweat of mother earth rises in miasmic clouds of fever-ridden vapour to hang suspended in the foliage of the ageless guardians of the jungle...

Happy listening my friends,
