Memorial Day - Monday 29th May 2023
Memorial Day is a day to honor and remember those who have lost their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
It's also an opportunity to pay tribute to the many individuals who have supported the military throughout history, including entertainers like Bob Hope (born 120 years ago on 29th May!) who played an important role in boosting the morale of troops during World War II.
Bob Hope was a comedian, actor, and singer born in 1903, who devoted his time and talents to entertaining American troops during World War II. Between 1941 and 1945, Hope made numerous trips to military bases and conflict zones around the world, performing for servicemen and women who were far from home and in need of some laughter and entertainment.
Hope's efforts were more than just entertainment; they were a lifeline to those serving in the armed forces. Many soldiers and sailors were dealing with the stress and trauma of combat, and his shows provided them with a much-needed break from the daily grind of war.
In addition to his performances, he also became known for his humanitarian efforts during the war. He worked tirelessly to raise funds for war-related charities, and he even went so far as to donate his entire salary from a USO tour to the Army and Navy Relief Fund.
Bob Hope's dedication to the troops did not go unnoticed. On September 11, 1963, he was awarded a Gold Medal by President John F. Kennedy in honor of his contributions to his country and the cause of world peace. The Gold Medal was a Congressional authorization to recognize his dedication to traveling worldwide with the United Service Organizations (USO) and entertaining American forces during World War II. He was also made an honorary veteran of the U.S. armed forces in 1997.
Looking back on his efforts during World War II, it's clear that Bob Hope was more than just an entertainer; he was a true patriot who wanted to do whatever he could to support the troops and help his country. His contributions to the war effort continue to be remembered and celebrated to this day.
As we honor the memory of those who have given their lives in service to our country, let us also remember the many individuals like Bob Hope who worked tirelessly to support those who serve. Their efforts helped to bring joy, comfort, and morale to our troops, and their legacy will continue to inspire us for generations to come.
Bob Hope died on July 27th 2003, living to be over 100 years old. He can be heard today in 530 episodes on RUSC including the WWII series Command Performance and G. I. Journal.
Happy listening my friends,
