Mardi Gras 1st March 2022

Mardi Gras 1st March 2022

It's a day that has many different names across the world. Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day, and Mardi Gras - which literally translates from the French, meaning Fat Tuesday - the day before Lent begins.

Lent is the period of forty days leading up to Easter, and traditionally is a period of fasting. So on the day prior to Ash Wednesday, folks use up all of their dairy products and rich foods by making pancakes.

Joy has been listening to shows this week, and discovered a couple which feature the date. The first comes from Fibber McGee, who on National Pancake Day, has decided to get up and make a pancake breakfast in bed for Molly.

Molly however, would much rather keep her kitchen in order. After several hours, and a disaster of pots and pans in the kitchen, Fibber finally makes the perfect hot cakes, which he and Doc Gamble enjoy, but by this time Molly has fallen back asleep.

This episode also features the recipe for the perfect pancakes from Mary Lee Taylor (the pseudonym of Erma Proetz).

Next up, is a show from Suspense called The Man Who Stole The Bible. We also discovered the Escape series have a broadcast of the same story.

The tale is set in New Orleans during Mardi Gras, and is the story of a salesman on a business trip who, after reading a Gideon Bible in his hotel room, discovers that he has unwittingly involved himself with a criminal gang, when someone tries to kill him!

I hope that your Pancake Day involves neither the danger of Fibber's cooking, or the danger of the criminal underworld. The scariest it will be in our home, is getting on the scales at the end of the week after all that syrup!

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
