We received the following wonderful letter from friend of RUSC Michael Thompson, which I wanted to share with you as besides sharing his introduction to, and experience from his love of old-time-radio he suggests some wonderful series to listen to through RUSC.

We received the following wonderful letter from friend of RUSC Michael Thompson, which I wanted to share with you as besides sharing his introduction to, and experience from his love of old-time-radio he suggests some wonderful series to listen to through RUSC.

I just wanted to write to thank you for your work and vision in making RUSC available.

I fell in love with old time radio about 25 years ago, as a boy of about 12 years of age, when my mom introduced me to Abbott & Costello and Burns & Allen through a couple of cassette tapes. Little did I know it at the time, but in falling in love with old radio, I also fell in love with the history of our country. As I acquired more and more tapes, I heard about World War II, rationing, FDR, the Berlin Airlift, etc. As I heard about these people and events, I wanted to learn more about them. How could I have known that “Who’s on First?” would transform me into a political scientist and historian?

While I have never lost my love for old radio shows, the cost of acquiring and maintaining new tapes had to take a backseat to the cost of my education and care for my family. When I discovered RUSC, however, it reawakened the excitement I used to feel every time a new set of tapes arrived through the mail. Being able to laugh at a “new” joke by Jack Benny or Fred Allen is like a breath of fresh air.

I’m especially gratified to see my love of this great form of entertainment being passed along to my children. My oldest son – 13 years old – can’t wait to hear the latest episode of Escape or The Shadow. My younger boys – ages 3, 4, and 6 – love hearing the Cinnamon Bear, Jack Armstrong, and Superman.

My hope and prayer is that this will be more than entertainment for them; I hope it will awaken in them the same love and fascination for history that I discovered.

Thank you again for making all of this available. You are doing more than just providing entertainment – you are doing a great service to preserve and promote the great heritage of our country.

Blessings, Michael Thompson

Thanks to Michael, I will be adding further episodes of these great series over the next few days. Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris P.S. Friend of RUSC Kevin Welbourn has advised me that from Sunday the 18th November in Australia, the History Channel is showing a five-part series on the History of Austarlian Radio. Unless you are in Australia you may not be able to get this but I have checked out the link and it is very interesting:

* Finally, if you would like to get in the mood for the forthcoming Thanksgiving day then you can go to the list of appropriate shows added to RUSC last Thanksgiving by clicking on the link.
