Jonathan Thomas's Christmas On The Moon

Jonathan Thomas's Christmas On The Moon

Jonathan Thomas and his Christmas On The Moon is a wonderful little series following in the tradition of Cinnamon Bear. Cinnamon Bear was first broadcast on radio in 1937 and was a huge success which went on to become a Christmas listening tradition. The following year in 1938 the makers of Cinnamon Bear also produced Jonathan Thomas’s Christmas on The Moon again a 26 part series leading from Thanksgiving through to Christmas Eve.

It has all the makings of a children’s fantasy tale as Jonathan in his quest to save Santa Claus meets with giants and goblins and Squeebublians who hate Christmas cheer and many hero’s in the form of his teddy bear Guz, Gorgonzola the Horse, the Fairy Queen and Whiskery Bill the Squirrel to mention but a few.

They visit wonderful places with names like Ohmagoodness, Merry-Go-Round River, Rumplestitch Land and the Valley of the Three Dwarfs and much of the story is told in whimsical rhyme. The following is the rhyme that introduces the story in the second episode and sets the scene:

"Jonathan Thomas who has just turned six got himself in a terrible fix.

He went to bed at half past eight, which isn't early, nor is it late

and he went to sleep with his teddy bear Guz, he never could sleep without Guz because

Well then when the chime on the clock struck nine and when it would seem he began dream

A beam from the moon came in to his room and two funny people named Ezra and Jeeple

Slid down and started to frown, at Jonathan Thomas and Guz

Well then Guz woke up and chased them up as any teddy bear should do

And then Jonathan Thomas he woke up too, 'cos he heard the fuz that was made by Guz

And he joined the chase to the funniest place since the world began,

And pretty soon he met a man, who turned out to be as he could plainly see, the man in the moon

Then pretty soon when he was in his room

There was the awfulist noise, even worse than boys can make with their toys

And he got more scared then he even dared or cared to let on

'Cos Guz was gone

And he sighed and nearly cried and if he had it wouldn't have been bad

And you know because the Squeebublians had kidnapped Santa Claus..."

But of course there is no need to worry as by the end of the story, just in time for Christmas Day Jonathan Thomas has kept his promise and saved Santa Claus.

It’s a magical story featuring the voices of the actors who also appeared in Cinnamon Bear and Joy and I are happy to be able to add all 26 episodes leading right up to Christmas Day!

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
