Grandparents Day
Grandparents Day is just around the corner! This holiday celebrates the special bond between grandparents and grandchildren. It is observed on the first Sunday after Labor Day, which falls on September 11, 2022.
The holiday was established by Congress in 1978 and was signed into law by President Jimmy Carter.
We celebrate Grandparents Day because it's a chance to honor our grandparents and show them how much we love them. It's a time to celebrate the special bond between them and their grandchildren, and their contributions to our families, neighborhoods and communities.
It's also a time for grandparents to share their wisdom and experience with their grandchildren, and to help children understand the important role that older people play in their lives. Grandparents and children have a special connection that is proven to both make grandparents live longer, and also make children more emotionally resilient, so spending a little time together this weekend is an opportunity to treasure that connection and spend some quality family time together.
I wrote an editorial about the history of Grandparent's Day last year, which you can read here.
Because it wasn't introduced until the late 70s, there aren't any old time radio shows relating to the day. However, there's a cute show from Family Theater called Grandpa's Marvelous X-Ray, which is just perfect - especially if you love dogs too!
Or, if you like a bit of comedy from Burns and Allen, in this show, it's Gracie's Grandpa's 92nd birthday, so they decide to throw him a surprise party.
One to tug on the heartstrings is Just Like A Lady, about young Peggy Finlay, who comes to America to live with her lovely Grandfather, who lives all alone in a big house.
Grandparents Day is the perfect opportunity to reach out to someone from another generation who may be feeling lonely. The last few years have been tough on everyone. You don't have to do anything big to make a difference in someone's life - it's the little things that add up and make a difference in all of our lives.
Happy listening my friends,
