Doris Day has passed away, aged 97
America and the rest of the world is today in mourning, after we learned that Doris Day has passed away.
For many Americans, she was the first Hollywood star many of the 'baby boomers' generation ever knew, and was there singing, acting and just being 'Doris Day' throughout their lives.
She was born Doris Mary Kappelhoff, on 3rd April 1922, to Alma Sophia (née Welz, a housewife) and William Kappelhoff (a music teacher and choir master) - and all of her grandparents were German immigrants.
She developed an early interest in dance, and in the mid-1930s formed a dance duo with Jerry Doherty that performed locally in Cincinnati. A car accident on October 13, 1937, damaged her legs and curtailed her prospects as a professional dancer.
While recovering, Day started to sing along with the radio and discovered a talent that she didn't know she had, which led on to a successful beginning as a big band singer.
She starred on many radio shows before making her film debut in 1948, and followed it up with a string of smash-hit romantic comedies. Which is your favorite of her movies? Mine is definitely Calamity Jane!
Doris Day was the personification of grace, kindness and optimism. She gave us joy in her music and warmth in her acting. Her compassion towards animals is a testament to the beauty of her character.
She may be gone but we shall not forget her.
