D-Day - A Complete Broadcast Day

D-Day - A Complete Broadcast Day

Many decades have passed since D-Day and the Normandy landings of 1944, but still, we simply cannot comprehend how terrifying it must have been for those soldiers who were asked to land on the target 50-mile stretch of the Normandy coast, early on that overcast Tuesday morning so long ago.

In this complete broadcast day, you will hear news of the Normandy landing reported as it happened throughout the day - the actual breaking news of the beginning of the invasion of Europe by Allied Forces - exactly as CBS studios on the other side of the Atlantic received it.

The bulletins are both moving and reflective, with each broadcast unfolding history as the civilians first learned it. And for those at home, waiting for news, the day was filled with terror and fear, both sorrow and joy, and an overwhelming anticipation from not knowing what was happening to their loved ones - their sons, brothers, fathers and husbands.

These recordings are an amazing archive, intensely moving and poignant, and as the day progressed it became a day of hope, and of never giving up.

Those who did make it home after D-Day, may have been fortunate enough to have escaped any physical injury, but they were certainly haunted emotionally by all that they had seen and been a part of on this tragic and heroic day.

Here are the first six broadcasts. Click here to listen to the remaining bulletins, which I will be adding each day to 6th June.
