Canada Day

Canada Day

Last year, after America's two hundred and thirty eighth birthday, I received an email from a long time RUSC member called Corey. It read...

"How come you never promote Canada Day (July 1)? Surely, Canada must have produced more OTR shows than just "Danny Marsdon."

I love to receive your feedback on anything we can do to improve RUSC, and something like Corey's email was one which would also lead us off into a new old time radio adventure, so that was a double thumbs up! :-)

But I couldn't help myself from thinking, what a good point Corey had raised... Why haven't we ever promoted Canada Day on RUSC?

Well the short answer is, I honestly don't know! It certainly hasn't been excluded consciously. Maybe it's because it's so close to our own Independence Day? Regardless, this year I'm going to shout about it from the rooftops!

On 1st July, it's CANADA DAY folks!

Now, for those who didn't know. Canada Day is celebrated in much the same way as our own Independence Day, with parades, carnivals, festivals, barbecues, air and maritime shows, fireworks and free music events, all to celebrate the anniversary of July 1, 1867, when the three provinces of Nova Scotia, Canada, and New Brunswick were united into a single country, which they called Canada.

The celebration was originally named Dominion Day. However, when Canada become completely independent of England in 1982, the name was changed to Canada Day for the following year's celebrations.

I'm on the hunt through the RUSC collection for any more old time radio shows produced in Canada, but in the meantime, here's a link to a special page I've put together, which contains all of the Canada produced or inspired shows that I can find right now. I'll keep adding to it this week, so do keep checking back!

Canada Day Shows

You'll find the Adventures of Danny Marsdon, which Corey mentioned, a Jack Benny show, recorded on location in Canada, and a short series called Nazi Eyes on Canada, which was an alternate look at an occupied Canada during the last World War.

Do you know of any other shows or series which were produced in Canada? I'd love to know about them, so please do feel free to email me on ned@rusc.com, or comment below to share your wisdom with everyone.

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
