Baseball season is nearly upon us!
As Opening Day of the 2021 Major League Baseball season approaches on Thursday 1st April, fans across the country will soon return to their home teams' ballparks - in most cases for the first time since the pandemic began.
The crack of the bat, and the smell of the freshly cut grass. Nothing says it's nearly summertime quite like the start of the baseball season!
Have you ever been to an MLB game? I remember watching my very first game, and can easily recollect being seated behind the home plate and really hearing the ball hit the catchers mitt. It's something I'll never forget. Do you have a favorite baseball memory? Player? Or do you maybe have a favorite team selection?
One of America's greatest sportswriter and sports broadcasters of the twentieth century, Grantland Rice, wrote a book which was serialized into fifty-two installments by RCA Thesaurus in 1954, with famed sportswriter Jimmy Powers narrating.
I was listening to a chapter of the book this week, called Grannys All-Time Pitching Selection in which (like the name suggests) he compares some of the greatest players of all time. He begins with his top four pitching 'Super Greats' before moving on to his 'Modern Greats'. Have a listen to see if any of them match up to who you would choose.
Although this week the stadiums still won't be full to capacity, it will be great to see fans in the stands once again. I won't be one of them as I haven't been to a game for many years now, but I will likely listen to one or two of the 300+ baseball themed shows on RUSC. They're spread across all categories from thrilling dramas through comedy, so there's something for everyone.
Alternatively, listen to the RUSC Baseball Radio Station for an action-packed collection of classic old-time radio newsreels, broadcasts, and everything baseball related in-between from the 1930s, 40s and 50s.
Happy listening my friends,
