A Summer of Sport!
I've always been a big sports fan (much to Joy's annoyance!), so have been following the soccer World Cup in Russia over these past few weeks.
It's a terrific shame that our boys aren't competing this time around, and I've been a little indecisive on who to cheer for. Have you been watching?
I've also been having a real search around the RUSC archives for any sports newsreel programs, to see if I could find anything soccer related, but there don't seem to be any existing radio broadcasts. It gave me a great excuse to listen to more of the Bill Stern Sports Newsreel programs though!
If you haven't listened to an old time radio sports broadcast before, I'd really recommend you give them a try. We have a few series available, such as:-
Another particularly talented sports writer and commentator was Grantland Rice.
He wrote one of the most memorable quotes of all time, coining the famous phrase "It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game."
He is considered to be one of the best known sports writers of the day, with his expressive writing helping to raise sports players to near demigod status, and he and his writing are among the reasons that the 1920s in the United States is sometimes referred to as the Golden Age of Sports.
In 1943 a new radio series, called The Favorite Sports Stories of Grantland Rice was broadcast. It was also known as The Sportsmen's Club, and included the most exciting and inspirational stories from the world of sport. Joy and I are happy to say that we've begun adding these shows to RUSC, so look out for these over the coming weeks!
