The Lone Ranger and his Indian companion, Tonto, had been riding the trail since dawn. The day had been hot and sultry, and as the afternoon drew to a close, they were hot and thirsty with canteens that had been empty since noon. The horses moved along at a lazy gait as the two men talked about when they'd be reaching the town, to pass along a message to the Sheriff.
