Anne Martin is on her way home from India on a steam ship after losing her husband. Since she has become widowed her life has had no meaning to her and all she can do is mourn the man she had loved, the man she had left behind. On board the steam ship is a little boy named Tommy who has also lost and is now an orphan after her parents were killed in an air raid. Tommy befriends Mrs martin when they come together in a life boat drill. Then when the ship is hit by a torpedo Mrs Martin risks her life to save Tommy. Having Tommy to love and care for is the savoir that Anne Martin needs to move forward from her grieving heart.
