David Harkness is a correspondent for the New York Star newspaper who overheard at target practice on the firing range that the men are still using single shot Springfield rifles and many men are killed whilst reloading. The Indians who have Henry rifles, repeaters, outmode the soldiers but Captain Quincy advises Harkness that they do not have the Henry rifles to issue and the officers that have them have bought them themselves. Surprised at this revelation David Harkness confesses that he has an awful lot to learn.
