While at school Francis Aud the least popular boy in school passes information to Giles Bateman during an exam, despite knowing that he could be expelled, because Bateman is the most popular boy in the school and Aud tells Professor Bale that he wants Bateman to be his chum. When Professor Bale challenges them over their cheating Bateman threatens to uncover things about him, which would be damaging for his position. Professor Bales lets the cheating go but suspects that Bateman is bullying Francis Aud. Later Bateman is found dead in his room from a beating with his cricket bat and Aud is the prime suspect.
