Philip Marlowe is supposed to be meeting Sammy Archer in Slatterie’s bar but he hasn’t turned up. When Marlowe asks if Slattery knows Archer, Slattery gets defensive and gives Marlowe a doped whisky. When Marlowe comes to Slattery let’s on he it wasn’t he who doped his drink but also he knows more about Archer than he let on.
