Today's story by Dr Philips Thomas is titled Uncle Sam's Attic, a storage place extraordinary in the history of scientific knowledge and invention. This is the story of the origins of the Smithsonian Institute when in 1829 Englishman James Smithson bequeath his estate and fortune to his nephew Henry James Hungerford with the stipulation that should his nephew die without children the whole of his fortune and estates should go to the United States of America to "found at Washington under the name of the Smithsonian Institution an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men". He intended that his fortune should do good for all men and that his name be kept alive.
