Beauford Canyon was utterly devoid of vegetation, water that lay in scattered pools was stagnant and poisonous, quite unfit for man nor beast. The floor of the Canyon was hard rock and gravel, it was the last place that anyone would choose for a camp site. That's why the Lone Ranger and Tonto were curious about a camp fire they had seen during the night and why they rode, accompanied by Dan Reed, along the rim of the Canyon shortly after daybreak.
