Loretta Henshaw has just buried her son and in her grief doesn’t want to hear how sorry Hattie Misener is that her son Jake killed him. Hattie too is sorry for her own son who has always been a hardworking god-fearing boy who came in to town one night and got in to a brawl on account of the liquor and shot and killed Henshaw who was unarmed. Hattie pleads for her son’s mercy and tells Marshal Matt Dillon that if her boy hangs that she will kill the Marshal.
