Many of the prospectors who came to California during the rush of 1849 turned to other means of livelihood when the search for gold was unsuccessful. Among them were trappers who set their snares and deadfalls in the high Sierras. But these same mountains gave shelter to bands of outlaws. It was not until the masked rider of the plains started his fight for law and order that the mountain country became safe for honest men and women.
