It was shortly after the holidays last year that Judy Phillips father died, and Judy and her mother Laura, moved into the third floor walk-up at 27 Fremont Street. Bill Haughton, superintendent of the ancient apartment building, has been an understanding ally in Laura's effort to help Judy adjust to life without her father. Laura's aware that the holidays will be difficult this year and there's something in Judy's manner that makes her more and more apprehensive as Christmas approaches.
