Added: Sep 04 2004
On the night of May 16th 1849 the sailing ship Lander Lake sowed at Buffalo bound for Milwaukee encountered a Northwest gale. 800 yards north of this spot she struck the reef and foundered all hands were lost including 60 immigrants, passengers on the unfortunate vessel. To the memory of the sailing ship Lander lakes lost in these northerly waters of lake Michigan this lighthouse is dedicated; Thunder Rock AD 1901.

Thunder Rock is a story about the lighthouse keeper, a man who attempted to escape from our troubled world to another world of his imagination in which he brings alive the immigrants who perished on those rocks on that fateful night in 1849.
