When Matt and Chester come across a well-dressed man with two thoroughbred horses and he rides away from them quickly Matt suspects that the man has stolen the horses. Matt encounters the man again in Dodge and finds out his name is Jack Portus and he is very flash with his money and has made a lot of friends on account of it. Jack Portus explains that he sped away as he did not know that Matt was the Marshall but Matt is still suspicious of Portus.
