Thomas Jefferson has just returned from the Virginia Constitutional Convention held at St. Johns Church in Richmond where he has heard the impassioned demand of Patrick Henry give me liberty or give me death. The speech has touched his heart and inflamed his soul and yet he has feelings of uneasiness and guilt. All around him he hears outcries for freedom justice equality and yet he knows that these fervent demands are not being made for everybody. There are those human beings who will have neither equality nor equity in the brave new world that is soon to be born. As a matter of fact, because of their skin color they are not considered to be human beings at all.
