Ken Creed was a gunman from Arizona who came to Dodge. In a bar he shot and killed a drunken man in self-defence witnessed by Marshall Matt Dillon. He told Dillon he was not proud of killing the man. Dillon knew Creed has a man who killed for a reputation and knew that what would really make Creed proud would be to kill a man as fast on the draw as Dillon. Creed took every opportunity to pick a fight with Dillon.
