Sou Chan took the boat from China, arriving in Portland, Oregon at just eighteen years old. He had only nine Chinese dollars in his pocket - and he couldn't speak any English. Finding his cousin in Portland was tough with a language barrier, and eventually a police officer dropped him off at a Chinese laundry for someone to help. By 1938, Sou Chan used all of his savings to start the House of Chan at the corner of Seventh Avenue and 52nd Street where it was situated for many years. This is the story of his life.
